PRAYERS!

Please pray for me this week....

This is nothing too serious...but I need some prayers!

As you all know...I am a fourth grade teacher and this is my very first year teaching! I am teaching at a small Christian school here in Texas. I love it here and all of the other teachers have been great to me!

Well...I recieved a new student on Tuesday. She is the FIRST exchange student that our elementary has ever gotten! We have had plenty in our high school and junior high. So, our school is used to this sort of thing. Here is the kicker....my new little girl is Chinese...but was born and raised in Costa Rica! So... she is fluent in Chinese and speaks this to her family. She is also fluent in Spanish because that is what she grew up around. To be quite honest, I wasn't too sure if she spoke ENGLISH!!! But, I finally started getting some one-word answers out of her. She is just extremely shy! I am just struggling with how to get her up to pace with the rest of our class. She has never been to school in America before...so, I know that the English grammar and all of that are really going to get to her! I just know that it will be a struggle for me, specifically since this is my first year and figuring out all of the regular students and their abilities has already been a struggle!

I just need prayers for wisdom and guidance in how to deal with this new student!! :)

I hope you all have a wonderful day!!!

XOXO,

Hilary

I'm sure you will do great with her! But I will keep you in my prayers, as being a teacher, I know how it is..

we have lots of students coming in who speak little to no english...and its difficult!

they tend to be really shy.

just remember cultural differences. sometimes she may not appear to be looking at you, but chances are shes listening. Often times in other countries its disrespectful for children to look adults in the eyes in other countries...

also, do you have an ESL teacher in your school? Someone you can pull resources and help from?

also, it pays to give that student a 'buddy' who tends to help them along the way. a girl with a girl usually works (one of your mothering, nurturing-types :) ) I always find they get a little less shy when they have a friend to rely on. Just make sure the friend doesnt "speak" for them all the time. That happens a lot, too.

Either way, you'll be fine!

Praying for you. If she is already fluent in two languages, she's probably a great learner, and you will get her caught up in no time!! Good luck, have an awesome week!

Hang in there - I know you will do great. Just take it one day at a time and know that you have people praying for you.

How sweet of you! My hubby moved to Canada from Poland when he was 8. He still talks about this first teacher and the difference she made in helping him adjust!

I'm sure she will be fine and will pick up on the language quit quickly as she already had two under her belt!!
